Lyon is one of my favorite cities in France.  My first visit was with my husband, Chris, and exploring Lyon was the highlight of our trip.

Lyon is the perfect backdrop for romance. The city is filled with charm, from its cobblestone streets to the picturesque Rhône and Saône rivers.

Built at the spot where the Rhône meets the Saône, Lyon is a beautiful backdrop that’s perfect for romantic strolls and unforgettable moments. Here are three must-see picturesque locations:

1. Fourvière Hill

Climb (or take the funicular) to the top of Fourvière Hill for a spectacular panorama of Lyon. Standing beside the grand Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière, you’ll witness breathtaking views over the city that are especially magical at sunrise or sunset.

2. Parc de la Tête d’Or

Stroll hand-in-hand through the Parc de la Tête d’Or, one of the largest urban parks in France. This idyllic space features a large lake and several gardens, and you can even visit the zoo for free.

Wander the rose garden for a sensory treat with your loved one.

Tip: This park is the perfect place for a picnic.  Visit one of Lyon’s markets to pick up some cheese, wine, and a baguette (splurge and do your picnic shopping at Les Halles Paul Bocuse).  Enjoy a date that’s small on price but big on romance!

Walk or cycle along the banks of the Rhône or the Saône River. The river’s pathways are a prime spot for a relaxed afternoon, watching swans glide by. Find a bench and bask in the peaceful ambiance as you enjoy the flowing water together.

Tip:  If you’re a picky eater, you might want to do a little research before trying some of the local specialties.  Chris once ordered andouillette in France – thinking it was the Cajun ‘andouille’ sausage.  Nope!   It’s an – ahem – acquired taste.

If you have a sweet tooth, like I do, then you’re going to love Lyon! Discover artisanal chocolatiers as you meander through the cobblestone streets, and sample the special coussin de Lyon, a treat made of chocolate and marzipan.

Delight in Lyon’s famous praline rose (pink caramelized almonds), which you’ll find embedded into many sweet treats, or just eaten by themselves.

Even if I just have one day in Lyon, I’m certainly going to be eating some delicious pastries!
