Lyon’s largest urban park offers a wide array of attractions and fun activities. It’s one of the best free things to do in Lyon!
You’ll find enchanting gardens, fascinating wildlife, and plenty of recreational opportunities for visitors of all ages.
Rose Garden
The stunning rose garden boasts over 30,000 roses representing 350 varieties. You’ll be amazed by the vibrant colors and intoxicating fragrances.
Wander through the meticulously arranged beds, featuring both classic and modern cultivars.
Peak blooming season is from May to October. You’ll find roses in every hue imaginable, from delicate pastels to deep, rich tones.
Benches scattered throughout invite you to sit and enjoy the beauty. It’s the perfect place to share a romantic moment!
Lyon Zoo
The park’s zoo houses over 300 animals from 64 different species. You can observe majestic big cats, playful primates, and adorable red pandas.
The African Plain area showcases zebras, giraffes (my mom’s favorite), and antelopes roaming freely.
The zoo also participates in conservation programs for endangered species, so you might even spot some rare animals.
Best of all, the Lyon Zoo is free! (It’s pretty rare to find a free zoo!)
Lake and Boating
The park’s centerpiece is a 16-hectare lake, perfect for leisurely strolls or boat rides.
You can rent pedal boats, rowboats, or motorized boats to explore the tranquil waters. Glide past the Ile de Souvenir and under picturesque bridges.
You might spot ducks, swans, and other waterfowl along the shoreline.
Botanical Garden
The botanical garden showcases an impressive collection of over 15,000 plant species. You’ll find themed areas dedicated to specific plant families or geographic regions.
The alpine garden recreates mountain ecosystems, while the French-style garden displays geometric precision.

Five stunning glass greenhouses transport you to different climates around the world.

Picnicking is also popular, with many grassy areas perfect for spreading out a blanket. (I’m a big fan of picnics when I travel!)

Summer brings the popular Lyon Music Festival, featuring outdoor concerts on the park’s lawns. There is something for everyone, with genres ranging from classical to jazz and pop.
Winter transforms the park into a magical wonderland during the Festival of Lights. You’ll be amazed by the stunning light installations and projections that illuminate the trees and pathways.
For fitness enthusiasts, the park hosts an annual marathon and several fun runs throughout the year. These events attract participants from all over France and beyond.
History of Parc de la Tête d’Or
Did you know that Parc de la Tête d’Or has been a beloved part of Lyon for over 160 years? This stunning green space was created in 1857.
The park’s name, which means “Golden Head Park,” comes from a fascinating legend.
It’s said that a treasure with Christ’s head was buried on the site. While no one has found this fabled treasure, the park itself is a true gem for Lyon’s residents and visitors alike.
Originally, the area was a marshy floodplain along the Rhône River.
The park’s designers, brothers Denis and Eugène Bühler, transformed this swampy land into a picturesque landscape. They drew inspiration from English gardens, creating winding paths and a large lake.
Over the years, Parc de la Tête d’Or has evolved and grown.
In 1865, a small zoo was added, which has since become one of the park’s main attractions. The botanical garden, another highlight, was established in 1880.
It’s one of the largest city parks in Europe, and certainly one of my favorite places! Even if you have just one day in Lyon, it’s worth visiting.

The park is open daily from 6:30 AM to 8:30 PM. These hours apply year-round, allowing you to enjoy the park in all seasons.
(Note that the zoo hours are shorter, from 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM)
